Ascent of Safed
Visitor centre
The Ascent centre was founded in 1983 to introduce visitors to the spiritual experience of Safed and to the heritage of the ancient city as a place of spirit, creativity and art. Hence the name: Ascent, a rising up. Safed has been known since the sixteenth century as the city of the spirit, and has drawn thousands from Israel and abroad who come to taste its particular atmosphere. Since it opened, Ascent has become the focus of that interest in the city, passing on the spirit of Safed through experience rather than lecture.
Ascent sits in a picturesque corner of the Old City, in a beautiful old building bordering the forest and looking out over Mount Meron, Ein Zeitim and the Baal Shem Tov forest. Throughout the year it runs a wealth of activities and experiential workshops on a wide range of absorbing subjects connected to Safed's particular spiritual heritage.
